Naturopath for Digestive Disorders in Sydney

Eating is one of the great pleasures in life. But the inability to digest and tolerate certain foods, with resultant bloating and discomfort, makes eating far less than a pleasurable experience. If you are looking for a naturopath for food intolerances or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Sydney residents can contact View to Health.

Here at View to Health, we can help those with digestive disorders caused by a range of issues including:

Hypo- or hyperacidity in the stomach
Inadequate enzyme secretion to digest protein in the stomach
Erosion of mucosal membrane lining or gastric ulcer
Disturbed intestinal permeability or “leaky gut”

This may be a result of NSAID treatment, Crohn’s disease or candida overgrowth, allowing large molecules to penetrate the intestinal mucosa. This sets up inflammatory reactions, which can lead to thrush, skin irritations, poor concentration and headaches. Other conditions demonstrating intestinal permeability include coeliac disease, food sensitivity, fatigue and ulcerative colitis.

At View to Health, we offer tests to identify the reasons for your digestive problems. These include

Food sensitivity profiles
Microbiome testing
Intestinal permeability test
Candida test

At View to Health your digestive problems are treated with the appropriate herbal medicine, enzymes, probiotics and nutritional supplements together with a comprehensive diet. By relieving your symptoms, you will be able to digest, assimilate and metabolise your food effectively, and have more energy.

Indigestion and Dyspepsia

As our eating patterns become more erratic and our interest in healthy eating diminishes, we are becoming more eager to take vitamin and mineral supplements with the aim to cover these nutritional deficits. However, if our digestive system is not functioning properly we are not going to gain the full benefit of either our diet or the supplements.

Our food needs to be digested before its nutrients are absorbed, and the first obstacle in this course is an underactive stomach. Insufficient stomach acid can cause multiple food allergies, iron deficiency, osteoporosis and chronic candida (fungal) infections.

Bloating

Insufficient stomach acid can cause bloating, as the protein content of the food in the stomach is fermented rather than digested, and this causes gas formation which causes pain. By simply adding spices to our food, we can improve our digestion as well as our well-being.

How can we improve our digestion?

Common spices we can use are ginger, chilli, cumin, cardamom, black pepper, galangal and turmeric. Papaya and pineapple contain digestive enzymes which are of benefit when there is insufficient digestive secretion. Bitter foods increase stomach acid and this overcomes indigestion and combats gut infections. The resulting gastric acid secretion also stimulates the release and activation of pancreatic enzymes to break down protein in the stomach. Intestinal motility is also enhanced, keeping the bowels regular. Bitters also inhibit gastric emptying and promote satiation, thus curbing excessive appetite and keeping us feeling fuller for longer. They also improve blood sugar levels in diabetics and reduce sugar cravings.

Gluten and Lactose Intolerance

The inability to digest gluten gives rise to malabsorption and accompanying symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Often it is found that these symptoms are a reaction to wheat of which the Australian variety, having been modified to increase its gluten content and drought resistance.

Often other grains containing gluten, such as rye, barley and triticale, do not cause such a problem. It has since been found that oats do not contain gluten, but instead contain a glutinous-like substance.

The component in gluten which causes symptoms is the gliadin fraction.

In those with coeliac disease, it is thought that gliadin causes an immune response which damages the intestinal mucosa.

Lactose intolerance is the inability to break down the lactose component of dairy products, mainly milk, due to insufficient lactase enzyme.

Some dairy foods contain less lactose than others and can be quite well tolerated.

Symptoms such as bloating, cramping and abdominal discomfort can be the result of a food intolerance requiring an IgG test. These tests can be arranged by your naturopath at View to Health in Sydney’s Inner West. who will also give you a dietary protocol and a herbal tonic for the digestion, to enable you to reintroduce suspected foods into the diet.

How Do You Treat Reflux?

Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease, or GORD, is quite common and often mistaken for indigestion. It happens when the lining of the oesophagus changes to tissue lining of the intestines, and this is caused by acid reflux. Being overweight or having a hiatus hernia predisposes you to GORD. H. pylori bacterial infection is also associated with GORD.

The medical treatment is with antacids to neutralise stomach acid or with hydrogen receptor blockers, or PPI’s, to lessen the release of gastric acid. However, PPI’s have side-effects of lowering the absorption of certain minerals and vitamin B12. This may lead to increased bone fractures with prolonged use. Also, they may alter the gut microbiome resulting in small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), especially in those with IBS. Reducing gastric acid secretion can also result in inadequate protein digestion in the stomach leading to bloating.

Certain foods such as coffee, spicy foods, alcohol, fatty foods, onion, garlic, tomato sauces, citrus juice, carbonated drinks, vinegar and mustard, may aggravate the condition.

Your naturopath at View to Health in Sydney’s Inner West will advise you on foods to avoid and alternatives to these.

Lynne will give you a treatment to soothe the gut lining and reduce inflammation as well as prescribing a specific probiotic for GORD. In addition, she will address any nutrient malabsorption and bacterial overgrowth.
