Metabolic syndrome refers to a plethora of metabolic disorders, usually arising from weight gain, mainly around the abdomen, resulting in serious health problems.
Metabolism slows down as you get older, so that the food we eat isn’t converted as efficiently into energy, but produces more fat in adipose tissue, and excess fat can be deposited in the arteries, blocking blood flow from the heart, and can also accumulate in the liver and gallbladder, due to inadequate bile flow, resulting in fatty liver and gallstones.
There is also a disorder in metabolism with poor blood sugar control and insulin resistance combined with poor liver function and hormonal changes.
This results in blood fats and blood sugars remaining high, leading to weight gain and a predisposition to Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver and gallstones.
Carbohydrates, especially refined carbohydrates and sugar, form triglycerides which, when in high levels in the blood, can cause cardiovascular problems. This is usually accompanied by high levels of low density lipoproteins, or bad cholesterol, when in the oxidised form, causes plaques to form in the arteries which binds fat deposits causing blockages.
High density cholesterol, on the other hand, is beneficial and comes from good oils such as olive, macadamia, avocado and coconut.
A high carbohydrate diet, including a high intake of bread, rice, especially white bread and rice, potato, pasta, beer and sugar contribute to high blood fats. This, combined with a low intake of fresh green vegetables and other vegetable fibre, and a lack of exercise, can lead to a disordered metabolism and Type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
