More than 1.2 million adult Australians have Type 2 Diabetes which is one of the consequences of the current obesity epidemic and is preventable. Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the body cells become resistant to insulin which reduces the sugar in the blood, so it then cannot be converted into energy but instead raises the blood sugar levels. Its causes are a combination of genetic and lifestyle interactions and include lack of exercise, excessive intake of refined carbohydrates like pasta, bread, white rice, also potatoes and sugar in all its guises. It takes 5 to 10 years for someone to develop diabetes, and this is usually preceded by weight gain. High blood sugar can produce complications such as stroke, kidney failure, poor blood flow and nerve disease (neuropathy) which can lead to amputations. The first signs are often impotence or thrush. Other symptoms include blurred vision, frequent thirst, hunger following meals, frequent urination, leg cramps, tiredness and numbness.
Regular consumption of burgers, chips and pizzas, along with beer and sugar-containing soft drinks, usually leads to weight gain and insulin resistance.
However, all is not lost if there is a significant change in diet with other preventive measures such as addressing any gut dysbiosis, improving liver function to help remove toxins, correcting nutritional deficiencies and reducing inflammation and acidosis. At View to Health in Sydney, your naturopath, who is also a dietitian, will help you to reverse Type 2 Diabetes with a personalised diet plan and a herbal formulation.
Metabolic syndrome refers to a plethora of metabolic disorders, usually arising from weight gain, mainly around the abdomen, resulting in serious health problems.
Metabolism slows down as you get older, so that the food we eat isn’t converted as efficiently into energy, but produces more fat in adipose tissue, and excess fat can be deposited in the arteries, blocking blood flow from the heart, and can also accumulate in the liver and gallbladder, due to inadequate bile flow, resulting in fatty liver and gallstones.
There is also a disorder in metabolism with poor blood sugar control and insulin resistance combined with poor liver function and hormonal changes.
This results in blood fats and blood sugars remaining high, leading to weight gain and a predisposition to Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver and gallstones.
Carbohydrates, especially refined carbohydrates and sugar, form triglycerides which, when in high levels in the blood, can cause cardiovascular problems. This is usually accompanied by high levels of low density lipoproteins, or bad cholesterol, when in the oxidised form, causes plaques to form in the arteries which binds fat deposits causing blockages.
High density cholesterol, on the other hand, is beneficial and comes from good oils such as olive, macadamia, avocado and coconut.
