Candidiasis is an overgrowth of candida albicans which is a commensal, or normal. Inhabitant of the intestines. There is an overgrowth of candida when there is an imbalance of microbial diversity. Candida is a yeast and has micelle strands which can penetrate the intestinal mucosal membrane, causing intestinal permeability and allowing the passage of products of digestion into the bloodstream. This can set up auto-immune and inflammatory reactions in the body, resulting in food sensitivities, skin infections, itchiness, fatigue and brain fog.
Low yeast mould diet (no wine, beer, cheese, rockmelon, watermelon, citrus, mushrooms or products of fermentation).
A healthy bowel should contain around 85% lactobacillus acidophilus (LA) and other friendly bacteria. LA has the function of increasing food absorption, detoxifying products of gram negative bacteria and increasing immune response. A healthy bowel is less susceptible to disturbance by high yeast foods and antibiotics. By providing favourable conditions for LA to proliferate, food sensitivities may be substantially reduced. Bifidus and LA maintain acid conditions in the bowel, and this is necessary to prevent yeast growth.
Yoghurt made from LA culture, unflavoured, preferably organic, 100 to 200 grams per day, provided you are not milk-sensitive, is an ideal method of recolonising the bowel.
Sacchromyces boulardii is particularly beneficial in eradicating candida overgrowth.
