Coughs

Different types of coughs require different treatments. Coughs fall into various categories and are characteristic of certain respiratory conditions.

  • Bronchial congestion with tenacious mucous is characteristic of whooping cough, bronchitis and emphysema.

For these conditions, stimulating expectorants are used.

  • Dry, irritating coughs and asthmatic non-productive cough, soothing, anti-inflammatory herbal remedies are used, as well as respiratory spasmolytics which relax the bronchioles of the lung.
  • Non-productive, persistent coughs and nervous coughs may require anti-tussive herbs as needed.
  • Sore, inflamed throats respond well to a herbal throat gargle.

Acute bronchitis is an inflammation of the trachea and bronchi of the lungs which starts out as an unproductive cough but progresses to copious infected sputum. It is best treated with antiseptic and demulcent soothing herbs initially, then herbs to help during the febrile phase, and anti-catarrhal and expectorant herbs.

Whooping cough is a highly infectious disease caused by Bordetella pertussis and usually affects children under five years of age. There is severe, paroxysmal coughing, and the course of the condition may last for two or three months. Hence it has been called “the 100 day cough”. Mucous is thick and tenacious and difficult to expectorate. The coughing is so severe that it may result in vomiting or a fractured rib.

Our naturopath at View to Health, who has recently recovered from whooping cough, will make you a herbal expectorant to help with this debilitating condition.

Asthma is a chronic lung condition with inflammation and narrowing of the airways making it harder to breathe. This causes coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and   chest tightness. Allergy testing is advised as well as a medical diagnosis. A treatment plan should be in place for emergencies.

Testimonials

“I had never seen a naturopath before, however was desperate to get my chronic pneumonia infection under control, after x4 lot of antibiotics I was still experiencing a cough, sore chest and shortness of breath. Lynne made me up x2 tonics one for my immune system and one specifically for my lungs. Further to this Lynne advised what foods / recipes I should be eating, which I followed very closely. After x2 weeks of taking these tonics I honestly feel so much better, my cough has finally resolved and I am no longer experiencing shortness of breath. I highly recommend Lynne, her tonics are magic!”
