A healthy immune system helps to both protect us from the impacts of adverse conditions and increase our resilience, enabling us to adapt these conditions of extremes of trauma and stress and recover from them. Our resistance to viral infections depends on the functioning of our immune system. By having a healthy immune system, we can reduce the recurrence, severity and duration of infections and prevent them from becoming chronic ones.
Recurrent and chronic infections can eventually impact on other systems in the body. Many factors comprise our immune systems: macrophages, T-cells and lymphocytes in the blood and the microbiome in the gut.
Approximately 70% of the immune system is in the gut and it is important that our gut has the correct balance of beneficial bacteria which fight off infection. It is imperative that the appropriate probiotic is prescribed, as different bacteria in probiotics are specific for different conditions.
A positive and optimistic attitude is also important in modulating our immune response. Stress and anxiety increase our inflammatory cytokines, and an adaptive immune system influences our ability to recover from inflammation-induced symptoms. There are specific strains of probiotics as well as anti-inflammatory herbs and foods which reduce inflammatory responses in the body and improve our immune resilience. Certain herbs used to treat anxiety will down-regulate inflammatory cytokines. Cytokines are signalling molecules that control immunity and inflammation.
Inflammation is the initial response of the immune system to the invading pathogen. Certain herbs which facilitate this inflammatory or cytokine response do not drive the response to an excessive degree, where there is tissue damage, but enhance the immune function to resolve the infection. Our naturopath at View to Health in Sydney can help you to strengthen your immune system with a herbal formulation, specific supplements and a healthy balanced diet. Cell-mediated immunity, innate and acquired, are present in the white blood cells, and this can be enhanced with immune-modulating herbs which strengthen and restore the immune system. The herb echinacea activates the immune system in the presence of an immunological challenge and astragalus has anti-viral actions. Medicinal mushrooms such as reishi, shitake and maitake have been used to enhance the immune system by increasing the white blood cell count in individuals with normal blood cells. Herbal adaptogens are also used, as these increase non-specific resistance to disease. Most importantly is a diet rich in colourful fruit and vegetables high in vitamin C and bioflavonoids, and adequate vegetable protein high in zinc.
“Lynne at View to Health helped my immune system be restored to a healthy balance after a prolonged period of ill health. The herbal tonic along with other supplements including probiotics, all brought me back to good health and I am now doing all the things I was doing before I got sick. Thanks Lynne.”
“I couldn’t recommend Lynne’s tonics enough. I was struggling with long Covid-19 symptoms (insomnia, fatigue, fragile immunity etc.) and Lynne gave me an immune tonic along with an energy tonic and night tonic to help regulate my sleeping and energy levels. After taking the tonics I feel so much better, I sleep more deeply, my energy levels feel better than ever and my overall health feels excellent.”
