Men's Health

The most prevalent concerns pertaining to men’s health and well-being would most likely fall into the following categories:

Erectile Dysfunction
Prostatic Hyperplasia
Low libido
Energy levels and muscle function
Metabolic syndrome and Diabetes

Erectile Dysfunction

This is quite a common condition, affecting about 40% of Australian men, mostly over the age of 65, but to varying degrees at younger ages. This often results in low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, relationship issues and general frustration.

There are various causes postulated for this high prevalence.

ED is often the first sign of impending Type 2 Diabetes and a result of Metabolic Syndrome where there has been a significant weight gain disproportionate to the body frame.

Lack of exercise is a possible contributing factor as well as some of the following:

  • High blood sugar and insulin resistance
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Alcoholism and cigarette smoking
  • Some medications and drugs
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Endocrine conditions and hormonal imbalance
  • Prostate hypertrophy
  • Radiation including carrying a mobile phone in the pocket
  • Loss of libido

There are various treatments available for erectile dysfunction, some of which can be most inconvenient and not always reliable, but a natural solution is always the best.

Our naturopath at View to Health can make you a herbal tonic and provide supplements, together with advice on dietary and lifestyle changes to make a difference to your erectile capabilities.

Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) and Prostatitis

Prostatic hypertrophy is a benign enlargement of the prostate that occurs naturally as men age and mostly occurs over the age of 60.

Symptoms include:

  • A frequent need to urinate
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Incomplete bladder emptying
  • Pain on ejaculation

Prostatic enlargement can cause blockage of the urethra which increases the risk of UTI’s, bladder stones and kidney damage. Various risk factors have been proposed including:

  • Reduction in testosterone levels
  • Chronic inflammation caused by infection (prostatitis)
  • Auto-immune conditions
  • Vascular function disorders

There are natural solutions for treatment and prevention.

Our naturopath at View to Health will advise you on environmental risk factors, foods to avoid and lifestyle strategies to reduce your risk of prostatic hyperplasia.

A herbal tonic will also address prostatic enlargement, relieve symptoms and urinary tract symptoms.

Energy and Muscles

In addition to a healthy diet (see page on Nutritional Medicine) and regular exercise, adequate sleep (8 to 9 hours per night), relaxation, moderation in drinking habits, healthy and happy social interactions and a positive attitude contribute to our energy levels.

Illness, fatigue, anxiety, depression, hypothyroidism, diabetes and other health conditions drain our energy. Apart from mental fatigue, muscle fatigue is quite common and relates to an accumulation in lactic acid in the muscles.

Exercise-induced muscle damage resulting in pain and soreness can impair physical performance in sporting activities and training. This tissue trauma triggers inflammation and can cause connective tissue damage associated with free radical production.

At View to Health, our naturopath will design an alkalising diet to reduce lactic acid build-up in muscles and prescribe supplements to reduce muscle soreness and discomfort during strenuous exercise or physical activity to which we are not accustomed. This special diet will also have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to counteract oxidative stress, thus reducing delayed onset of muscle soreness.
