Rheumatoid arthritis is a debilitating condition in which the immune system targets the lining of the joints causing inflammation and joint damage. This can lead to leg ulceration, deformities and organ damage. It is characterized by periods of remission and intermittent flare-ups. The sooner the condition is treated, the better is the outcome. Rheumatoid arthritis is genetically linked in 50% of sufferers and risk factors include smoking, microbial infections, environmental toxins and digestive issues especially SIBO. Several dietary triggers are implicated, and dietary intervention can protect against RA development.
Many rheumatoid arthritis sufferers have hypersensitive reactions to the nightshade family of foods resulting in exacerbation of joint inflammation. The Solanum or Nightshade family consists of potato, eggplant, tomato, capsicum, cayenne, chilli, paprika, pimiento and tobacco.
Wheat, coffee, alcohol and an excessive iron intake may exacerbate an arthritic attack. An acidic system can also precipitate the arthritic condition and the balance between acid- and alkaline-forming foods is important. There are often associated hormonal imbalances. Your naturopath at View to Health in Sydney will arrange hormone testing, give you a list of which foods to avoid or include in your diet and formulate a herbal treatment for the condition.
