Psoriasis is an inherited skin condition characterised by chronic inflammation, with an overproduction of skin cells, which build up to thick, dry, flaky patches. Psoriasis may develop into psoriatic arthritic later in life. It affects 1 to 5% of the population and is considered an auto-immune disease.
It may appear on the scalp, nails, knees, lower back, elbows and ears. Symptoms are red, scaly plaques which are itching and burning.
Triggers may include food, lack of sleep, mental stress, chemicals and pollutants.
Infections, such as a streptococcal throat infection, are also aggravating factors.
A naturopathic approach to psoriasis aims to target the cause as well as any future flare-ups. Conventional treatments for psoriasis, such as corticosteroids, have unwanted side-effects which limit their long-term use.
The treatment for psoriasis requires a systemic approach. A naturopathic treatment for psoriasis aims to treat the whole person with a view to addressing predisposing risk factors, any digestive system dysfunction or immune dysregulation. Also, your naturopath will prescribe treatment to heal and soothe the skin, to reduce redness and dryness and assist detoxification and liver function. Chronic skin problems such as psoriasis and eczema are associated with toxic overload, and the inability of the organs responsible for elimination to respond adequately.
A diet containing anti-inflammatory foods, with avoidance of any allergens or irritants, will be designed for you. Lynne will formulate a special herbal tonic for you to support lymphatic clearance and reduce inflammation and irritation, assist with the detoxification process blood cleansing and liver herbs, modulate immune response to reduce reactivity.
“For me, Lynne’s been incredibly helpful in improving my psoriasis skin condition! A healthy & anti-inflamatory diet has been instrumental in dramatically reducing my flare ups and skin-aggravation. It could definitely be worth a visit for any diet/auto-immune related issues. Thank you Lynne.”
