Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils caused by a viral or bacterial infection. This results in sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever and swollen lymph nodes. It can also be caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Tonsillitis can result in a middle ear infection. Tonsils are part of your immune system and have a role in preventing infection in your body. Medical solutions for tonsillitis involve antibiotics, and often, tonsillectomy.
