Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Recurrent urinary tract infections, or UTI’s, can be an indication of lowered immunity or stress, causing a change in the vaginal microbiome. There is a link between gut health and urinary health, since all mucosa in the body is linked. Constipation can allow bacteria to travel from the rectum to the urethra. The wearing of tight underwear and the use of sprays and creams to the genital area may also predispose to UTIs.

Symptoms of UTIs may include:

Burning sensation
and pain during
urination
Unpleasant
odour
Cloudy or
dark coloured
urine
Only being able to
pass small amounts
of urine at a time

How does our Naturopath at View to Health treat UTIs?

The primary goal is to enhance the person’s internal defences by:

  • Promoting a pH that will inhibit the growth of pathogens
  • Improving immunity
  • Addressing the diet and food allergies
  • Improving digestive function
  • Balancing the gut microbiome
  • Reducing inflammation

A vaginal microbiome test can also be arranged. Balancing the gut microflora will help to balance the vaginal and urethra microflora. The UTI needs to be treated quickly to prevent the infection spreading to the bladder (cystitis) or the kidneys. The urinary pH should be between 4.6 and 6.0 to help bacterial infection. Our naturopath at View to Health will advise how to achieve this pH.
