Eczema is an atopic or allergic skin condition with red, itchy patches which can be wet or dry and flaky which can appear on the elbows, behind the knees or over the entire body. It is an expression of an over-reactive immune system and is often inherited and can be associated with asthma. It is usually medically treated with cortisone cream which only temporarily suppresses the expression of the condition but does not prevent the eczema from returning. There are also side-effects from steroid treatment. The longer the person has been using cortisone, the more difficult it is to resolve the eczema.
Naturopathic preparations containing herbs which stimulate digestive function, as well as immune-modulating herbs and nutrients to address any leaky gut, have helped to reduce the recurrence of eczema. Anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory herbal tonics and creams provide relief from the redness and itchiness. Food intolerances will be investigated and addressed with an appropriate diet. Lynne is also a dietitian and nutritionist and will provide you with an anti-inflammatory diet free from foods which may trigger the eczema .
Any deficiencies in beneficial gut bacteria will be replenished with strain-specific probiotics. A possible candida infection will be tested for, where indicated, and a herbal preparation made to address this. Any impact of stress on the outbreaks of eczema will be addressed with a herbal tonic as well as advice regarding relaxation techniques.
